Exodysis I
Performance by tyroneisaacstuaand Sarah White, in response to sculptural installation by Abel Shah
Nov 2021. Live Performance,
The Swiss Church, London. Supported by Camden Giving.
Exodysis I is an open-ended sculptural installation created by Abel Shah for their residency at The Swiss Church. ‘The body of work developed alongside ongoing dialogues with fellow practitioners and collaborators, thinking about how meaning and relationships are built through language and exploring alternative ways of communicating. By using materials which make up the cocoons of our everyday environments and recent histories, the sculptures start to act as symbols of the layeredness of our own skins and experiences.' (Abel Shah)
"We were witness to an outstanding performance at the Swiss Church… Sarah and Tyrone very quietly started capturing the attention of the room as they bravely responded to the works on show through expressive movement. We watched quite mesmerised over an extraordinary length of time (90 minutes) as the mostly silent and sensitive performance built up to a shocking loud climax that included a mixture of electronic music and live saxophone." (Mary Branson and Julie Hoyle, previous co-Chairs of the Swiss Church London Art Committee.)
“Touch me Not”: The Stand-In, The Decoy and the Redeemer
Performance Lecture, 2019 MAKE GOOD Lectures with Morphē Arts.
Written and directed by Sarah White. Performed by tyroneisaacstuart and Sarah White.
1 hour 5 mins, Husk Coffee and Creative Space..
This lecture responded to the chapter Whole Wounds in Peggy Phelan's book Mourning Sex, notably her observations of The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Caravaggio. The lecture explored methodologies of engagement between theology, art theory and philosophy: responding to and elaborating upon the themes of redemption, substitution, trauma and tacit/bodily knowledge as explored in Phelan's text.
"Sarah's interdisciplinary practice and especially her collaborative approach to art making has always struck me as intelligent, experimental and sensitive…”Touch Me Not" succeeded in touching upon serious subjects such as trauma and redemption while leaving an entrance for viewers own reflections, experiences and perceptions.” (Giulia Shah: AbelShah)
You Shall Only Go Up and Not Down
Performance Lecture, 2021 50 minutes
St John's Church, Keswick, Lake District
Written by Sarah White. Performed by tyroneisaacstuart and Sarah White.
This work-in-progress performance was a development of Sarah's previous performance lecture, "Touch Me Not”: The Stand-In, the Decoy and the Redeemer. The work was a semi-improvised performance, utilising a script written by Sarah, which is spoken whilst Sarah and Tyrone move. In this iteration of the work the dancers used radio mics to allow simultaneous movement and speech. The work also incorporated a sofa acting as a prop; and the piece was performed in the aisle, on the stage, and in the balcony of the church. The entire script was simultaneously projected onto the back of the stage area, as rolling text appearing in time with the performance.
“Sarah’s work is at once visceral and intensely well observed. In a deeply personal, professional and accomplished performance in Keswick 2021, I and the audience experienced an arresting range of emotion, reflection and challenge: characterised through an alliance of intricate choreography and instinctive movement. The seamless and effective melding together of spoken word, soundscape and movement; the thoughtful use of space in the venue - all centred around the presence and heft of the sofa prop - brought to us a tangible sense of burden, wrestling, surrender, triumph and failure. This was a performance of vulnerability and gravitas that spoke of an artist committed to exploring her creative practice and sharing the heart and soul of her work.”
For Some the Clouds Become Solid Ground
Performance Lecture, 2023 Art Night Dundee, InWith Programme, Curated by Nomas* Projects
Performed and created by tyroneisaacstuart and Sarah White. with creative assistance from Gardner & Gardner
2x30 minutes (8.30pm and 10.30pm) in Slessor Gardens, Dundee.
For Some the Clouds Become Solid Ground was a collaboration between (dance) artist Sarah White and interdisciplinaire tyroneisaacstuart. Both artists utilise improvisation, creating spaces of contemplation and participation for both the performers and audience. The visual exhibitions drew from tyrone and Sarah’s collaborative and individual archives of sound, text, movement, images and objects.
"...This is emblematic of the kind of magical experience which continued throughout the evening... saxophone playing and mesmerising dance by Sarah White and tyroneisaacstuart in Slessor Gardens as the light eventually faded and a quarter moon grew bright. This last was organised by Dundee-based Nomas Projects, part of the multi-faceted grassroots InWith programme. These are the experiences which linger when one wakes up the next morning to a cloudy sky and wonders if one didn’t dream it all." Susan Mansfield, The Scotsman
